Slinckx, Sniady, de Roux, Vizzini, and Yoshioka

MIM Brussels, Belgium

14/6/26 12:30

At the crossroads of play, invention, and sonic imagination, this programme of pieces all written for Ensemble Fractales unfolds like a series of shifting playgrounds—each piece proposing its own rules, materials, and forms of interaction.

Massimiliano Vizzini’s Playground Folk Song embraces play in the most literal sense, incorporating toys and weaving together a tapestry of tonal references that feel at once familiar and strangely recontextualized. The result is a joyful, curious exploration of memory and musical fragments.

With Reina Yoshioka’s Cookie Monster, humour and affection take center stage. Inspired by the composer’s love of cookies, the piece channels a playful, slightly chaotic energy—music that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet remains precise in its craft and timing.

A different kind of exhilaration drives Matias de Roux’s Psychopomp, a work that thrives on momentum and physical energy. Using custom-made 3D-printed instruments, de Roux creates a vibrant sonic rollercoaster—music that is tactile, dynamic, and full of movement.

In F#3 (world premiere), Pierre Slinckx continues his exploration of hybrid sound worlds, turning to the rhythmic and quirky universe of the Casio keyboard. With a hands-on, almost artisanal approach, he blends electronic and acoustic elements into a soundscape that is both tightly constructed and delightfully offbeat.

Finally, Marta Śniady’s How Can I Help You expands the concert into a multidimensional experience. Combining music, video, and electronics, the work treats sound as one layer within a broader communicative field. Meaning emerges through the interplay of image, gesture, and reference, inviting the audience into a space where listening becomes an active, interpretative act.

Together, these works trace a path through different modes of play—physical, technological, and social—offering a concert that is as much about exploration as it is about sound itself.
