Vestiges du Temps

Espace Senghor, Brussels, Belgium

30/9/26 18:00

The masterpiece of French composer Gérard Grisey, Vortex Temporum, unfolds across three movements, each embodying a distinct experience of time: the measured temporality of humans, the vast, dilated time of whales, and the frenetic, almost incandescent speed of insects. Few contemporary works retain such a sense of immediacy and timelessness. Vortex reshapes our perception of time, stretching and compressing it until it seems to coil, fold, and dissolve—an experience that is at once hypnotic and disorienting. Drawing on the principles of spectral music, Grisey builds his harmonic world from the inner life of sound itself, revealing a sonic landscape that feels both deeply organic and strangely otherworldly.

Alongside Vortex Temporum, composer Martin Loridan’s new work, L’émergence du temps, proposes a fourth temporality. Inspired by the Big Bang, this new piece extends Grisey’s exploration toward an origin point—an imagined threshold where time itself begins to unfold. If Vortex traverses different perceptions of time, Loridan’s work reaches toward its birth: a moment of expansion, of emergence, where sound and time arise together in a state of transformation.

In this Grisey–Loridan project, light is conceived as an integral component of the work. Lighting designer Hugues Girard will create an immersive environment that does not merely accompany the music, but brings it into space—revealing its movements, amplifying its tensions, and rendering perceptible the unfolding of time itself. Light becomes an extension of the musical gesture, a medium through which the audience experiences the work as a total, enveloping form.
