The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre organized a composition competition (EMTAHK) for the third year in a row, in which all students of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre were invited to participate, regardless of their major. The competition invited works with a length of 7–10 minutes, written for fc (picc+afl), cl (bcl), violin or viola, vcl, piano.

On Friday, May 16, the winners were announced in the Academy’s Great Hall:

First prize Yui-Ka Zheng “Phanio’s Silence”
Second prize Ryan Adams “Entanglements”
Third prize Donato Attanasio “Inner Peace”
Vaida Vovere “I’ll always come back” (diploma)
Jimena Cabrera Álvarez “Iterations” (diploma)

The jury of the competition included Toivo Tulev, Helena Tulve, Tõnu Kõrvits, René Eespere, Liisa Hirsch and the ensemble Fractales.

The ensemble Fractales, which performed the work, is an international contemporary music collective founded in Brussels in 2012, and its core members are Marion Borgel (violin), Merryl Havard (cello), Renata Kambarova (flute), Dries Tack (clarinet) and Gian Ponte (piano). The artistic director of the ensemble is Oren Boneh.
